I know most of you guys feel extremely envious of me because this coming 1st of June, I will be celebrating my first anniversary being a bum bum bum. This is the ultimate wish of all the burnouts out there, though probably some of them may not outrightly admit it. By the definition of bum, "a person who does no work", I can't actually call myself 100% bum. To fight boredom and ultimate stagnancy, I still freelance as home based tutor and writer. But of course by the nature of freelance - it's not regular. So whether I got a call or not, I'm basically at home sleeping, eating, watching Korean drama, playing The Sims Medieval, and tending my pet onion. Yes I've got an onion for a pet. I also have this tendency now, that each time I had to do multiple responsibilities or tasks, my brain gets cluttered up too easily. So all the menial tasks, I have to write them all down in my notes whereas a year ago I queue to-do's mentally.
So anyway, here are some of the perks I gained from bumming:
- Weekdays and weekends are the same except when I need to seek the bank.
- I don't eat too much (in my case) because I don't have a reason to.
- I don't need a break from work cause I dont have work.
-I watch Korean Drama or any other American TV series in marathon because I have time to kill and not because I need a breather.
- I don't have officemates who invite me to go out every friday night or steal my weekends from my family.
- My old friends who have nice salaries and are working in a high-end type of workplace does not contact me too often anymore.
- I get to spend my time at home 24/7 with my family and know them better than the past 23 years of my life. I have more time contemplating about myself and my faith.
- This bum stage has become a pilgrimage towards my inner self. This had helped me knew myself better.
- I have defined concrete goals for myself in the future. I have never planned "concrete" ever before.
- My cravings in general (food, travel, luxury, etc.) have reduced significantly.
- I had plenty of time to study my surroundings and the different characters of people.
- Bumness is next to Dumbness - not true. I came to realize that stillness of career does not necessarily come with stillness of learning. This phase has helped me developed my character to a certain maturity.
- Above all these, I don't get depressed.
In any case my list will go longer and longer, it will just seem that this is a justification of my bum-ness. Well actually, it is - now. Anyway, there are lots of bummers in the Philippines. Most of the politicians are bummers too.
